While Shostakovich was writing his 10th symphony the Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin died. Shostakovich is said to have written this scherzo as a musical portrait of Stalin, hence the relentless pulse and dissonant harmonies throughout the piece which portrays his character. Stalin had many meeting with Shostakovich where he often berated for him a criticised his compositions.

This well known and much loved piece is a fast, exciting work playable by bands Grade 4 and upwards.
